The location for this building is an empty lot on the north east border of Old Town Barcelona. Currently the lot is home to local markets and is a gathering place for the local community.  The atypical site created unique design considerations. The building uses passive design strategies to make it as efficient as possible before the addition of mechanical systems. Barcelona is in a subtropical climate zone where shading a building from direct sunlight and using reflective materials can greatly reduce a building’s energy consumption. The building is lifted off the ground to both preserve the original communal aspect of the land while also shading and protecting it. The building is covered in a innovative solar panel shading system. This shading system both reduces heat gain from the green house effect by shading windows while also producing energy for the buildings active systems.
